A Room Full of Missing Women Art Exhibit
A Roomful of Missing Women Art Exhibit by Betty Kovacic was held from March 7th to April 5th, 2008 at the Arnica Artist Run Centre in Kamloops. This exhibit featured fifty portraits, one for each of the first fifty women who disappeared from Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside, as well as fifty shrouded blow-up dolls wearing sashes inscribed with childhood aspirations. We were fortunate to have Maggie de Vries, sister of missing woman Sarah de Vries, as our guest speaker at the opening. The exhibit aims to give a face to each of the missing women, and to enable viewers to acknowledge the women’s individual significance, and our common humanity. It addresses the global problem of male violence against women, and challenges the aspects of our society which marginalize women, recognizing the women as victims of both gender-based violence and of a society which failed them.
