Our Herstory
The Kamloops Women's Resource Group Centre was a project of the society, which also began in 1984, and offered a wide variety of services, programs, education and awareness activities for women. These included information and referrals to women-focused community resources, a lending library of literature and video resource materials for women, a safe space where women could drop in during the week, self help and support groups for women, education and awareness programs. Also this included events covering issues of concern to women, and advocacy and lobby activity for women. As well, the centre consulted and worked with various community groups and programs to address and bring attention to the needs of women, and provided training opportunities for women's education, and volunteer work experience for women attempting to enter or re-enter the paid labor force.
Unfortunately, due to federal and provincial government cutbacks in 2002, the centre lost all of its government funding. As this was the only funding the centre was receiving for operational costs, we were forced to close our doors in 2006, as were other women's centres across B.C. The Kamloops Women's Resource Group Society, which oversaw the centre, remained together and continued to work for women's rights within the community.
In 2007 the Kamloops Women's Resource Group Society moved to a new location and opened its doors at #2, 375, 4th avenue in downtown Kamloops. The society is able to perform limited functions of a woman's centre, but continues to focus on recording women's herstory, holding events to raise awareness, working to improve women's rights, and referring women to resources within the community.
With this new office space, we have been able to become involved with more events, such as the 2008 and 2009 Vagina Monologues performed at Thompson Rivers University. Despite our limited funding we are still committed to improving the lives of women in Kamloops, regardless of ethnicity, sexual preference, socio-economic background or history.
We are building up our involvement in the community again, and hope to offer increased services and support groups for women in the coming year as more funding is obtained. We are currently entering our 25th year as the Kamloops Women's Resource Group Society, and are planning events to celebrate the society throughout the year.
